Blood donations are needed in all parts of the country, and Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City and Northwest Missouri, Joann Woody, says that donations slow down during the colder months, marking a need for increased support
“Whenever we move into the winter season, we see a dip in blood donations which puts a strain on the blood supply across the country.”
Woody emphasizes that only three percent of the eligible population donates blood and that simply isn’t enough to keep up with the demand. “We know that one in seven people who walks into a hospital is going to need a blood transfusion for something, whether its surgery, or treatment for cancer, or other chronic illness.”
Area residents interested in donating blood are encouraged to find a nearby blood drive by downloading the American Red Cross app or visit the Red Cross website.
Anyone who donates blood between now and Jan. 5 will receive a free long-sleeve blood donor shirt. Woody notes that anyone who donates blood from Jan. 5 through Jan. 31 will be entered into a drawing to win two tickets to the Super Bowl.
