Leavenworth Excavating & Equipment Company, Inc., in partnership with the Missouri Department of Transportation, began an intersection improvement project Wednesday at U.S. Route 169 and Buchanan County Route FF.
While work on the main intersection has commenced, officials confirmed that weather delays have pushed back the closure of 49th Street. Originally scheduled for March 18, the street is now slated to close on Thursday, March 19. The closure is expected to remain in effect through June 2026.
The project aims to enhance safety and maneuverability by widening the intersection and constructing two large concrete truck aprons on Route FF and 49th Street. MoDOT says the additions are specifically designed to improve the turning radius for tractor-trailers. Additionally, crews will upgrade drainage systems and shoulder slopes to align with current safety standards.
Motorists should prepare for a 10-foot width restriction across both lanes for the duration of the project. While the road remains open, flaggers may be present intermittently to direct traffic through the work zone.
All work is weather-permitting and scheduled for completion by mid-August 2026. Drivers are encouraged to exercise caution and stay alert for changing traffic patterns in the area.
