The Iowa Senate has expanded a bill that would criminalize lying about academic credentials to secure employment. The House previously voted to impose fines and a 30-day prison sentence for falsely claiming degrees or academic credentials. The Senate’s amendment includes larger fines and up to two years in prison for falsely claiming professional licenses. The bill aims to address instances of individuals misrepresenting qualifications, such as a teacher falsifying a teaching license or a nurse anesthesia license. The legislation was prompted by the case of former Des Moines Superintendent Ian Roberts, who was arrested for falsely claiming a doctoral degree.
