After evaluation, the Missouri Department of Transportation will keep the Gene Field Road Bridge over I-29 until next spring.
The bridge was closed on Monday after being struck by an oversized load. One of the bridge’s support girders was badly damaged, causing it to separate from the bridge deck. Due to this, and the pre-existing condition of the bridge, MoDOT will keep the bridge closed until it can be replaced.
A project to replace the bridge was scheduled to begin in October of next year, but will now be accelerated to begin in the spring of next year. Due to an ongoing project by the city of St. Joseph, road traffic is restricted between Karnes and Cook Road and is being detoured
