Former Missouri House speaker sentenced to prison for COVID relief fraud

Former Missouri House Speaker John Diehl was sentenced to 21 months in prison for wire fraud after misusing federal COVID-19 relief funds for personal expenses, including country club dues and vehicle payments. Diehl received $380,000 in federal loans for his law firm but admitted to using the money for personal use. He had previously resigned as House speaker in 2015 after a scandal involving sexually suggestive text messages with a college intern. Despite repaying the relief funds, Diehl was ordered to pay a $50,000 fine in addition to his prison sentence.
