Kansas felon crashed scooter during police chase

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon who was caught after a chase and scooter crash.

Shortly after 11a.m. Tuesday, a police officer attempted to stop a Suzuki motor scooter in the area of 17th and Kansas Avenue in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

The scooter fled for several blocks and crashed. The driver, later identified as 31-year-old Christopher Edwards fled ran from the crash and officers chased.

Edwards entered an occupied residence in the 1400 block Atchison Street. He entered that home through the front door and pushed several residents out of his way as he fled out the back door.

Police officers located him a short time later hiding under a porch in the 1400 block Santa Fe.

Edwards received minor injuries from the scooter crash. After he was taken into custody, police took him to Amberwell Hospital for examination. He was treated and released, and then taken to the County Jail. He is being held on requested charges of fleeing and attempting to elude and other traffic charges, interference with law enforcement, battery, criminal trespass, and criminal possession of a firearm. 

Police found a handgun on the scooter.  He has previous convictions for a sex crime and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.
