The University of Kansas Health System is closing its pediatric intensive care unit

The University of Kansas Health System is closing its pediatric intensive care unit due to low patient numbers, with all patients being transferred to Children’s Mercy. This move comes after Children’s Mercy announced a new tower to meet increasing demand for pediatric care. The two hospitals have collaborated since 2000, with Children’s Mercy already handling the majority of the region’s complex pediatric intensive care. The closure of KU’s PICU will allow for more capacity in the neonatal intensive care unit, which is often over capacity. No jobs will be lost in the transition, and Children’s Mercy officials are prepared for the change.
